On inspiration, and trusting myself

On inspiration, and trusting myself

Hey there! Thanks for checking out the blog :)

I plan on writing a lot here, about my art, about my life, and how those two fit together - maybe you'll find it interesting... who knows.

Regardless, I wanted to get a little intro post up in the meantime, to introduce myself, and my work as an artist.

My name is Lydia, I'm a 26 year old artist from Canada, and I am currently living on the most beautiful tropical island in QLD Australia. I'm working at a resort here on the island (my day job) and building this art business on my evenings and weekends because ultimately, all I want to do is paint - so if I can turn it into a business, why wouldn't I?

I've grappled with the idea of starting my own art business since I was in highschool, debating an application to OCAD - Ontario College of Art and Design...

I gave up on the idea when I decided a science degree was more practical, and now, 8 years later, I'm revisiting the idea. The 9-5 lifestyle just doesn't suit me, and I've really had to lean into the unknown and trust myself to get the ball rolling. All I know is I absolutely love painting.

When I paint, I loose track of time, I am just so 'in flow' that I often don't remember to eat or even drink water. I literally have to set alarms to snap back into reality so I don't just die of dehydration. You could call it an obsession.

When it comes to my inspiration, I am so inspired by nature - that's probably my most common subject matter as an artist. You'll find a lot of landscape pieces and bird portraits here on my online shop because that's what I love painting and gravitate towards.

Sometimes I'm really inspired by my imagination, I'll just have a moment where I see a scene and it's not something I can really describe until I translate it onto paper. You'll find some of these works in my imagination series.

I love colour as well, and colour theory literally blows my mind. I can't believe it takes only three colours to make up all of the colours you could imagine. Wild.

Anyways, that's all I've got for now.

Chat soon,

Lydia
